a Frank Lloyd Wright filled weekend

Recently Alan and I decided to take a 3 day weekend trip in celebration of his birthday and a promotion that I received at work. It was fabulous to get out of town for the weekend but so strange to be without our little guy! North happily spent the weekend doing all of his favorite things with Grandma and barely even noticed we were gone.

Here is the first post ever to this blog that doesn't feature photos of North! (OK it has 1...)

We headed to a resort in Pennsylvania's Allegheny Mountains so that we could visit two houses by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright--we'd been meaning to tour both for a while but neither allow children under 12 on the tours so a weekend away without our little guy provided us the perfect opportunity to finally visit.

The first house we visited was Kentuck Knob - a deluxe home in the style of Wright's 'Usonian' designs. While photos were not allowed in the house, we did snap some of the grounds of the estate, which included an incredible sculpture garden.

Some of our favorites from the sculpture gardens

The post light in the drive - even it was well designed

While away, we also ceased the opportunity to check out some local restaurants (like a brewery we found) and movie theaters.

We also stopped by a local park that had beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls

The second house we visited was Falling Water. Again, photos were not allowed inside but we did snap some of the exterior. It's truly an architectural masterpiece and we loved the opportunity to visit it.

Stairs descending from the living room lead straight to the stream.

Once home, to properly round out our Wright visits, we did stop by the local (to DC) Wright house available for touring -- the Pope-Leighey house. This one DOES allow children under 12 to tag along on the tour and so North was able to enjoy the experience as well! Again photography was not permitted in the house so the only picture we have is the one snapped below.
